What you'd like to see in FlowChart.NET 5 ?

Please tell us what major new features you'd like to see in FlowChart.NET 5 ? We will still release a few more 4.2.x updates with smaller improvements and fixes, but the next major update will be version 5 coming this winter.

Thanks!

Hi,
First a good improvement will be not in the flowchart itself but in the demo; some more complex applications will be nice, not only the basic stuff.
Second - improvements to the problems addresed here on the forum.
Third and the most important I think is to keep support on the forum. In this case will be usefull some kind of better organization meaning: If I have a problem i go on this forum and search for it (supposing the keyword I use its good) and if I don't find the answer I post a question. A structured problems arrangement would be nice; eg: box related, attaching related, events related, arranging related, etc.

I think more straightforward support for keeping a node diagram aligned with the background image,  even when resized.   Features such as ZoomToStretch (as opposed to just ZoomToFit) that would allow the node diagram to scale to a stretch aspect ratio along with the background image scaling to stretch.   Also, ZoomX and ZoomY would be in this same category.   It seems like this would be a desirable feature for many of your customers if they knew how to easily do it.

Seems like a nice tookit so far.

Well as per my post in another thread, I'm using Layered Layouts and am having problems when I call Arrange on the layout where users have set certain tables to IgnoreLayout=true, and leave others as false.

It would be nice if I could override which layer each node should be placed in when calling Arrange on the layout.

You have a great product here though, keep up the good work.

Here is my wishlist -
  • More intelligent layouting mechanisms. More faster and smarter layouting.
  • Intellisecnce XML help for the functions.
  • A better help document. (Existing one is not bad eithr, but can be more better).
  • Use of C# 2005 tools like generics etc
  • Good code commenting using XML constructs and code conforming to MS Framework design guidelines.

I will post more as i think of it.

Cheers

I am using flowchart for an application that provides layout functionality like in MS Powerpoint to the user. I tested a lot of .net controls out there and so far flowchart is by far the best for this task.

Nevertheless some issues are mssing  and I would be most happy to see them in a future build:

I would like to see a table class similar to the one in Powerpoint:
-
create a table with a given number of rows and columns
-
each cell of a table can hold controlHosts where you can embed, e.g. a richtextbox control
-
The table needs formatting functions like frame color, weight and style, fill color. The margin of each cell has to be adjustable. This frame has to be independent from the embedded controlHost. To highlight certain rows or columns, it should be possible to format the whole frame of a row/column at once
-
column and row size can be adjusted by moving the splitterline between two rows or columns
-
the whole table, a whole row or column should be selectable by clicking on a certain spot on the table to format the complete table/row/column
-
there must be methods to add/delete rows, columns and which also creates/deletes the embedded controlhosts.
-
There should be methods to split/combine table cells

With this kind of a table layout class flowchart.net would be a perfect tool to create applications with layout capabilities like powerpoint. It would not only be perfect for my application but most probably also for your marketing guys to promote flowchart.net not only as a flowcharting tool but also as presentation creation tool Wink

Some other issues from my side are:

The docextents should be settable in designtime. Also it should be easy to set an offset or option for the document at designtime so it can be shown e.g. in the middle of the screen. So far I am using ScrollX, ScrollY which isn’t very nice to use.

The flowchart document should have adjustable margin properties (in measureunit), where the drawing of objects can be restricted.

The ruler control should offer an easy way to move the origin (0,0) to a certain point on the flowchart document.

The ruler control should optionally only be as large as the flowchart document and sh

I would like to see a Image Class which can hold Images or cliparts. The usage of a box and placing the image inside is a bit to complicated.

It should be possible to change the z-order of each chartObject, also for controlHosts.

I hope that some of my wishes will make it into the next version  Smiley

Hi Stoyo,

is it possible that you give some comments if some of the above proposed features will make it into the new version 5?

As this thread is no longer the top thread it also would be very nice if you could move it to the Feature Suggestions board. Then it is easier to find Smiley

Thanks
Dirk

Hi Dirk,

Most of these should make it into the 5.0 version, though we might leave some for 5.0.1 Smiley

The spanning cells feature provides something similar, have you tried the RowSpan and ColumnSan properties of the Cell class?

Control-hosting cells are one of the major planned new features. In case you've missed a post on the "new in flowchart.net 5" topic, the other planned major features are container nodes, and support for custom node and link classes.

Stoyan,

Maybe this information could be put up somewhere, like i seen in Google Mail or some website with a link .... Coming Soon, and list of all features with a small description below each feature.

Approximate date of Alpha, Beta and final release versions would definately help.

It will also help prospective buyers who would decide to wait for a feature and their decision making.  Wink Grin

Hi Stoyo,

it's great to hear, that almost all features will be in there. I definitely need them for my project.

No I didn't try these as the whole table control has no control hosting capabilities so far, which is a must for my app.

As long as the new version will include the features for a table like the ones I described I will be most happy to wait for it Smiley

I'm new to FlowChart but here's a few things I'd like to see in 5.0:

1. Use double instead of float for any parameters in the library

2. Code library in C# 2.0, support .NET 2.0 only and Visual Studio 2005 with heavy use of generics. If you still fill the need to support .NET 1.1, then please create separate installations for .NET 1.1, .NET 2.0 (as well as for x64 builds when they're available)

3. Provide common properties for all components
bool Debug
List<string> Status

If Debug=true then Status will provide an internal state of what's been done to the component, useful for debugging purposes

4. Fix bugs in sample code, such as hard coded Working Directory folder specification in FCDemo.NET solution

In the short time I've spent working with 4.3 I've been very, very impressed with the product, however I do agree with some of the other posters that as good as the current documentation is, additional task based documentation would be a very good addition to the product.

GDI+ drawing primitives can work with parameters only up to float precision, so we are not sure if keeping FC.NET objects coordinates as double will be very useful?
