Cannot run on-line demo

Print Post
Hi,

I'm trying to run the on-line demo of NetDiagram but I'm getting this error:

runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method

I debugged the error to this line:

fc = applet.getFlowChart();

I have the latest version of the JRE (1.6.0_01) installed.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi,

What browser and OS do you use, and is the Java plugin installed and enabled for that browser?

I'm using IE 6 on Windows XP SP2.

Yes, the Java plug-in is installed and enabled.  Actually I see three all listed as:

Java plug-in 1.6.0_01

Is the "Scripting for Java Applets" option enabled in the security settings page? It should be enabled by default.

If you have more than one JRE version, could you verify that "Use JRE 1.5 for APPLET tags" or "Use JRE 1.6 for APPLET tags" is selected in the advanced settings page? JRE versions 1.4 and older won't work, because the applet uses some generic classes.

Does the Java console icon appear in the taskbar notification area, and are there any messaged displayed in the console?

Scripting for Java Applets is enabled.  Just to be sure I reset the security settings to the default values.  Still getting the same error.

I only have 1 JRE installed...1.6.  Previously I had both JRE 1.4 and 1.5 but I uninstalled these.  I did verify that I have Use JRE 1.6 for Applet tags enabled.

The Java console is not appearing in the notification area.  I can run other Java based apps.

I have just noticed you are using IE6. It seems we'll need to install a fresh Windows copy to get IE6; I will let you know later if we get the same problem.

By the way do you have a "Sun java console" command in the IE Tools menu, and if you open it, can you see any error messages displayed? Also, is the applet loaded at all - can you see its drawing canvas and can you draw with the mouse there?

I do have Sun Java Console in my IE tools menu...no errors displayed.

The applet is not loading at all.  Where the drawing canvas should be I see a small red X in the upper left corner.

Should the JDiagram.jar file be downloaded into my Java cache?

C:\Documents and Settings\uskeca\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar

Ok, thanks; we are just installing a fresh XP copy on a test system here and will check if that happens with our IE6 too.

Here the applet loads and runs fine in IE6. Have you tried loading any other Java applets? The might be something wrong with the Java plugin configuration, e.g. if you have uninstalled JRE 1.5 and 1.4 after installing the 1.6 version.

Yes, I am able to run other Java applets without a problem.

I had uninstalled JRE 1.4 BEFORE installing JRE 1.6.

Do you use the option that prevents loading unsigned applets? Is there an error icon shown in the IE taskbar? If you open the Java applet from the Control Panel, click Settings and choose View Applets, can you see JDiagram.jar shown in the applet cache?

Where do I check if I have unsigned applet downloading disabled?

Yes, there is a yellow error icon shown on the IE taskbar.

The JDiagram.jar file is not shown in my Java applet cache.

When you open the page for the first time, can you see the Sun Java logo and a loading animation - those should be displayed while the Java plugin downloads the jar file.

I do not see the Sun Java logo.  So I'm guessing the jar download is somehow being blocked.
