Lines not displayed in Visio Viewer
Apr 14th, 2008 at 2:21am
Print Post
Hello,

I am exporting my flowcharts to Visio.vdx files and when I attempt to look at them using my Viso 2003 Viewer the shapes are all present, however the lines do not display. If I open the .vdx file using Visio Pro 2003, the lines display properly.

Hope someone can help!
Thanks
Barry

Apparently Visio Viewer does not support all shape attributes used by the VisioExporter. If you remove the arrowheads before exporting, the viewer will load the connectors successfully.

However, there are other problems too. For example, the nodes are rendered using the default unit set for the document, but not the connectors, so the positions of nodes and links do not match. You might try exporting with different MeasureUnit values. If that doesn't help, we'll have to implement some viewer-compatible mode for the Visio exporter.

Thanks Stoyo,

Haven't had much luck yet... for removing the arrow heads, do you have another option? I need to be able to point out the flow. The auto generator is fantastic, but sometimes it still puts nodes in some weird spots, so I need to be able to show direction.

Hi Barry,

The viewer recognizes the arrowhead elements when they are saved from Visio, so we'll just copy the exact format used by Visio. We'll send you a new version of the exporter when this and the unit issues are fixed.

Hello,

Wondered if you had a chance to follow up on this yet? If you need a beta tester, let me know!

Thanks

This version of VisioExporter should make the links visible in Visio Viewer:

https://mindfusion.eu/_beta/visio_viewer.zip

Our developer is still struggling with the node size differences; I'll post an updated version when that's fixed too.

I hope that helps,

Thanks Stoyan!

Do I just unzip this into my working directory, or do I need to register any of these first?

Thanks!

Hi Barry,

Unzip it into a new folder, and add that folder to your project reference path. Move the new folder to the top of the path list and the project will use the new assemblies. They might not be very stable, so if you have any problems with them, just move their folder down in the reference path lists - that should return you safely to the stable version. If the license compiler complains about strong name differences, edit licenses.licx and set PublicKeyToken=null on the line that refers to Flowchart.NET.

I hope that helps,

Hello,

Sorry for the delay, I am going to be testing starting tomorrow. Is there a new build I should download?

... hopefully this update will make your last version supporting .net 1.1!

Hi,

I'm afraid there is no newer version . Now at least we know why Visio Viewer displays only rectangles. The exporter writes just the master shape name in the exported XML, and relies on Visio to load the master definitions and display the correct node shapes. Apparently the Viewer doesn't keep the master shape definitions around, but relies on all nodes having their complete geometry described in the exported file - in the form of sequences xml elements describing lines, arcs, curves, etc. We'll implement this in the 5.1.1 release.

Thanks Stoyan!

Is there an eta on the next release? I am hoping it comes out before you stop supporting the .Net framework 1.1 !

Hi Barry,

Don't worry, we will support .NET 1.1 for a long time, but will provide .NET 1.1 assemblies only upon request - they won't be included in the standard installation package anymore.

Good morning,

I tested out the Visio's in visio viewer and the lines are displayed, however they do not link up to any of the nodes.

Hi,

Actually the links are at the correct locations, but the nodes are not, due to the missing support for master shapes in Visio Viewer. This will be fixed when we implement the <GEOM> element in VDX to describe all graphics primitives for each node.
